Hector, Matt, Jen and their team welcome you to The Crooked Well.
Starting with a gap year in a French nightclub collecting glasses, Hector’s career took him to New York for a year then on to Hotel du Vin Winchester where he met Matt. From Commis waiter to Restaurant Manager in 6 months he has gone on to set up award-winning Brighton Hotel du Vin, done his time at Petrus, and spent 4 years at Babylon, Roof Gardens winning Restaurant of the Year ’09 where he met Jen.
From the structured and disciplined environments of Hotel du Vin in Tunbridge Wells, Brighton and Winchester, right through to time spent at acclaimed La Gavroche learning more traditional cooking techniques from the best, Matt’s CV is impressive. But this is not the point. He has a passion for producing honest good food in a relaxed environment using locally sourced and seasonal ingredients. Dining is not just a necessity, it is a pleasure.
Having chosen at an early age to persue her career as an Actress, Jen predictably found herself in the business we call catering. From a year in Gaucin, Spain to her time in London at award winning Sam’s Brasserie and Babylon she has always prided herself on great customer service. You will find her splitting her time between being general Crooked Well girl-friday and showing off on stage and screen.
2 years ago, after Hector and Jen had spent countless evenings fantasizing over bottles of red about the “516” restaurant, and some time away in South America, Hector decided it was time to do it for himself, and approached Matt with a dream.
To have their own neighbourhood restaurant and bar.
The search for their site had them exploring nooks and crannies all over South England, until they ended up right back on their own doorstep in Camberwell…..
